Shawn played his minor hockey in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada where he was drafted into the OHL in the 3 rd round to the Hamilton Steelhawks. He played 4 years of junior hockey and was then drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the 5th round 95th overall in
the 1989 NHL Draft. He went on to play in over 750 professional games in the AHL, IHL, NHL and the DEL in Germany.  He also had a short stint with the Canadian National Team.  His biggest  accomplishments were winning the Calder Cup with the Philadelphia Phantoms in 1997/98 season and being named to the AHL all-star team in 1998 and the IHL all-star team in 1991/92.

He retired in 2000 and has been a middle school, social studies teacher since. He is married to a retired professional figure skater and has two sons and a daughter.
